Who Stole My Church? by Gordon MacDonald
Millions of people in their fifties, sixties, and seventies feel their churches have been hijacked by church-growth movements characterized by loud praise bands, constant PowerPoint presentations, and cavernous mega churches devoid of any personal touch. They are bewildered by the changes, and are dropping out after thirty, forty, or fifty years in a congregation. It’s a crisis!
In this fictional story, pastor and author Gordon MacDonald uses topical examples and all-too-familiar characters to reassure readers that it is possible to embrace change, and to demonstrate how that change can actually be a positive influence in their church. The church, he says, has always been in a state of change; it has been changing for the last two thousand years. It is time to embrace that change and use it further the Kingdom of God.
Chasing Fireflies by Charles Martin
A novel about fishing, baseball, home cooking, and other matters of life and death . . . from the author of The Dead Don’t Dance and When Crickets Cry.
When paramedics are called to the scene of a burning car, they find a six-year-old boy in the nearby ditch. His mother is dead, no one knows who he is, and he isn’t talking. Wearing only cut-off jeans and clutching a sketchpad, he’s malnourished, small for his age, and covered in scars showing years of physical abuse.
Chase—a small town journalist raised by foster parents—is drawn to the story and seeks to uncover the child’s past. But by digging into the boy’s past, Chase is digging back into his own long-buried emotions. As he works to discover the boy’s identity, he also finds the answer to the question that got him thrown in jail in the first place—the story of his own history and the father who gave up everything to get him back.
Quaker Summer by Lisa Samson
Lisa Samson’s quirky, accessibly literate style has broad appeal to readers of contemporary fiction.
Heather Curridge is coming unhinged. And people are starting to notice. What’s wrong with a woman who has everything—a mansion on a lake, a loving son, a heart-surgeon husband, and soapstone countertops—yet still feels miserable inside?
But when Heather wrecks her Suburban outside Baltimore, Maryland, and two Quaker spinsters come to her rescue, she spends a summer of awakening and suddenly finds herself at a crossroads. Sometimes you have to go a little bit crazy to find the life you were meant to live.
